The Field Museum is one of the finest natural history museums in the world. It hired McGuire Engineers (MEPC) to modernize the museum’s chilled water and steam heating plants. One particular challenge was phasing construction so that the building had cooling and heating during construction.

Central Cooling and Heating Plant Renovation


ENGINEERING SOLUTIONS


  • Fully integrated design consisting of a thermal energy story cooling system, low pressure steam boilers for humidification and heating, and multiple custom air handlers that deliver twice the amount of ventilation as the existing systems

  • Placement of four centrifugal electric chillers with 48 water tanks plant



Also included in the design:

  • Electrical service and switchgear room

  • Variable speed domestic water pumps

  • Electric and diesel fire protection pump

  • Used energy stimulation software to evaluate the new thermal energy storage system, which was estimated to be 30% more efficient than the system replaced, and a payback within five years

  • Construction administration services
